Veterinary Technician Specialist
University of Florida Small Animal Hospital
Hello, my name is Lucy Sumners, and I am Veterinary Technician Specialist at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital. I had an interest in veterinary medicine from a young age but did not enter the field until after completing a BA in Art History and finding it hard to enter the work force in that field. I started as a kennel assistant at a general practice in Raleigh, North Carolina and after starting tech school, quickly realized that emergency and critical care was where my passion lay. I left GP after two years, starting as a technician assistant at a 24 hour emergency and specialty referral center. I found my niche in emergency, but also worked for a few years in the surgical/anesthesia service, maintaining anesthesia on-call shifts while working as an overnight ECC technician. I moved back to my hometown of Gainesville, Florida in 2016 to join the ranks of the Gator Nation as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the ICU. I achieved my VTS(ECC) in 2018 and have provided my expertise and knowledge in helping care for my patients, along with teaching fellow green and seasoned technicians, vet students, rotating interns, and ECC residents. Teaching is the favorite part of my job and I love being able to leave a mark on those that come through my ICU. I have a special interest in sepsis, coagulopathies, anything to do with the kidney, extracorporeal therapies, and mechanical ventilation. In my spare time, you'll find me curled up reading with a cup of tea as my cats run amok or planning my next stateside or overseas adventure. I am a self-professed foodie and welcome any recommendations for restaurants, breweries, cideries, and wineries.
