Kristina Carter Bartley is currently the Director of the Behavior Management and Psychological Enrichment Program for the Center for Comparative Medicine and Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. She leads her team in the creation and implementation of various innovative enrichment behavior management practices for multiple species. It was there she started an interfacility Enrichment Club that focused on educating staff around enrichment/behavior management techniques as well as creating solutions to improve animal welfare while supporting research aims. This then led to her creation of the New York Metro Enrichment Club along with colleagues in the area. The Enrichment Club continued the conversation around behavior management via presentations, roundtables, and field trips. It was such a success, Kristina founded the American Association for Laboratory Animal Enrichment, AALAE. AALAE focuses on promoting, educating, and fostering an open communication around enrichment and behavior management, while providing a resource to the lab animal community regarding behavior management and enrichment practices. The organization is devoted to advance lab animal welfare by providing resources to all lab animal facilities on cost effective options to better the psychological health of laboratory animals. As Founder and President of AALAE, she enjoys promoting and creating a resource for people like her to network and talk about their passion regarding animal welfare, behavior management and psychological enrichment for all laboratory animals.
Kristina Carter Bartley has a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from the University of Maryland, a Master’s in Laboratory Animal Science from Drexel University and a Laboratory Animal Behavior Certification from the Animal Behavior Institute. She has publications around social housing, enrichment techniques, and behavior management solutions. She has spoken in various conferences and symposiums regarding enrichment and behavior management such as Quad, Tribranch, and national AALAS conferences regarding innovative enrichment practices.
