The canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is the most important parasite of dogs in the United States. This presentation will review the parasite’s life cycle and the pathology associated with infection in dogs. Multiple factors influencing trends in heartworm epidemiology and geographic distribution will be examined.
