WORK-LIFE INTEGRATION vs. BALANCE – WHICH ONE MAKES YOU HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER
Work-life integration and work-life balance are two related concepts that address the relationship between a person’s personal and professional life. While they share some similarities, they have a great deal of differences. Work-life balance is defined as the idea that individuals should maintain a clear boundary between their work and personal lives, which means that neither work nor personal life encroaches on the other concept. The focus on work-life balance is on creating a clear separation between work and personal life, this often involves setting specific hours and taking time off to rest and relax. In work-life balance, the aim is to allocate a roughly equal amount of time to both work and personal life, creating a sense of equilibrium. It will be important to reduce stress and prevent burnout by setting boundaries and disconnecting from work during personal time. Work-life integration, also known as work-life blending, is a new thought process, replacing the concept of work-life balance. Work-Life Integration creates more synergies among all areas of our lives and puts us in control of how we allocate our time. Basically speaking, it is the ability to blend what you need personally and professionally to make both areas successful. To be more fulfilled and to develop a deeper sense of your own well-being and those of others around you, shifting our mindset to understand where and when life and work combine, making that line less blurry and allowing us to lead more positive lives. It recognizes that work and life are not always easily separable and that they can coexist more harmoniously. It is understood during work-life integration, we know that work demands can affect personal time (and vice versa), it allows for a more fluid approach to management one’s commitments. Individuals practicing work-life integration may have flexible work hours, the ability to work from home or adapt their work schedules to accommodate personal commitments. Work-life integration emphasizes personal fulfillment and the idea that achieving success in one area of life can positively impact the other. The similarities of both these concepts are both aiming for a more positive well-being and reducing stress of everyone. As we explore the concept of well-being, both these concepts aim to improve the overall well-being of individuals by addressing the relationship between professional and personal life. Both of these concepts also aim to reduce stress and prevent burnout, which is an utmost important aspect for all those in the Veterinary profession. While there are these similarities, there are some differences, such as the concept of boundaries, time allocation, approaches to work itself, and personal fulfillment. Looking at the concept of boundaries, while work-life balance is about setting clear boundaries, while work-life integration blurs those boundaries for a more flexible approach to this. Time allocation is another concept where there are clear differences, work-life balance involves allocating specific amount of time to work and personal life, while work-life integration allows for a more fluid, flexible time management. Approach to work is seen as something contained with certain hours in work-life balance concept, while with work-life integration may involve integrating work tasks into personal life and vice versa. With personal fulfillment, work-life integration places more emphasis on personal fulfillment and the idea that both professional and personal life can support and enrich each other. Work-Life Balance is a true myth these days, in that it implies that there are only two components to our lives, work and life, and that these two components are separate and equal time devoted to each of them. Individuals trying to achieve the balance find more stress and anxiety when one of the components falls within the other. Equal balance is imperfect, and we are living in a 24/7, always connected world. As a leader, we need to be supported our team members who need to take personal time while at work and as a team member, we need to understand and commit to getting the work done, even if it is after the normal working hours. Work-Life Integration requires trade-offs, flexibility, and understanding on both sides of the isle. If you consider work-life integration more of a symbiotic relationship, you will achieve peace of mind and understanding for both personal and professional time and commitments. To respect your own work-life integration, there are concepts are important for exploring and understanding how these can impact the Veterinary team members. We will explore them each more in more detail and understanding these concepts may not be able to be set in the perfect manner due to the type of work being performed, however, being flexible and understanding will decrease your stress and anxiety and increase your own balance and peace. • Respect Your Boundaries: Knowing your boundaries and communicating the expectations of those boundaries to your team members, while understanding and accepting theirs. Speak openly and professionally of your needs and wants with your team and allowing them to do the same will build more trust and understanding and less negativity. • Control Your Devices: Take control of technology by finding time to turn off and unplug, no matter how long it is. This is particularly difficult and stressful for some very connected individuals, however, turning off these devices will allow you to regroup, reset, and turn your mind and thoughts to something else other than work and responsibilities. Make a goal of “time off” from the device, find something else to do, and work on this daily as it will increase your positivity and well-being. • Own Your Schedule: Find a schedule that works for you and allows you to be fulfilled. This is particularly hard in the veterinary field due to the work schedules we keep and our own thoughts and mindset, however, when you are off from work, we need to be “off.” It is our time, and we need to take it and not feel guilty for taking time for our own well-being. • Encouraging self-care: Veterinary Teams should be encouraged to prioritize their own self-care and well-being. Proper self-care routines, such as regular exercise, good nutrition, mindfulness, and time for hobbies and activities can help with the management of stress and prevent burnout. • Team Collaboration: Encouraging teamwork and collaboration among Veterinary professionals can help distribute the workload more effectively and make it easier for individuals to take time off when needed without causing disruptions. • Professional Support: Employers and organizations should consider providing access to counseling or support services for their team members. The emotional toll of working with animals and clients can be significant and having access to great mental health resources can help maintain positive well-being and prevent burnout and compassion fatigue. • Time Management: Use of effective time management techniques to maximize your productivity at work so you can have more free time for personal activities. Prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and minimize time-wasting activities. • Embrace imperfection: Understand that achieving work-life integration doesn’t mean perfection. There will be times when work demands more attention, and other times when personal matters require more focus and embracing these fluctuations and adapt as necessary. • Regularly reassess: Periodically reassess your work-life integration strategies to ensure they align with your evolving personal and professional goals and visions, what worked for you in the past may not work in the future. It is essential to recognize that work-life integration is a highly individualized concept and what works for one person may not work for another. Using different tools and techniques will work for different people. It is essential to find the combination that suits your unique needs and circumstances. Building a support system, staying organized, and making time for self-care is fundamental to maintaining work-life integration and managing stress. The key is to find a balance that allows you to lead a fulfilling life that combines your personal and professional aspirations while maintaining your overall positive well-being and mental health.
